Tips for Installing Drawer Fronts

A couple weeks ago I shared the rustic rolling 6-drawer dresser that I made for my boys room – it was the first time I had ever built drawers or installed drawer fronts. Growing up in a cabinet shop, Spencer can pretty much do it with his eyes shut so today we wanted to share some tips for installing drawer fronts.

Tips for installing drawer fronts

After you install your drawers – it is time to install your drawer fronts but they can be a little tricky. You want to make sure they are “perfectly” centered on all sides BUUUUT still line up with the other drawers too. So how do you do it?

First, drill your screw through the back of your drawer and out the front just a little bit. I’m not sure why I have so many pictures of this step… but you should get the idea! haha.

Next, line your drawer front up where you need it to go. Make sure it is perfectly spaced out and lined up just right – then press on the side with the screw firmly.

This will make an indent into your drawer front.

Without this little indent – about 90% of the time that you go to screw the front into the drawer – your front will slip and you will screw it in wrong. The indent helps hold the front where you need to while you drive in the screw.

Sink in your screw. Using an impact drill is the best bet, but make sure you don’t sink it too far that your screw comes out the front.

After you sink the first screw, your drawer front will be nice and tight against the drawer – you can make any little adjustments you need too to ensure your front still has the right reveals and nothing shifted while you were sinking your first screw – then sink in three more screws – one in each corner and your done!

If you are nervous about the front slipping too much or about getting the right reveal – go ahead and buy and use a clamp and clamp the drawer front to the drawer and sink in your screws!

Just like anything else – practice makes perfect!
