Planked Farmhouse Twin Bed

Remember when I shared my boys Rustic Transportation Room – last year? Here is the tutorial for the Planked Farmhouse Twin Bed that I made for them. I love the rustic plank look and they are really sturdy and perfect for my little boys!

They are pretty easy to make and don’t cost a lot money, money, money either!

Here is a list of the supplies you will need:

(2) 2×4 at 48”
(2) 2×4 at 35”
(10) 1×4 at 25”

(2) 2×4 at 20.5”
(2) 2×4 at 35”
(10) 1×4 at 13”

Optional Rails:
(2) 2×4 at 75”
(4) 2×4 at 36”
1 plywood board at 75”x39”

Step One: Cut all your wood to size.

Step Two: Dado your tops and bottoms – the 35” pieces.

Some people have really fancy dado blades — and then you have us. We do not have really fancy dado blades so we fake it and it works like a charm – all you need is a table saw!

How to Dado with a Table Saw

Use the table saw guide and set your width – a 2×4 (on the side) is 1 1/2” wide so the middle would be 3/4”. You want to cut out the wood between 1” and 1/2” for the middle. Lets start at 1/2” and work our way over!  Set your saw blade depth to cut a hair more then 1/2”.

Run all your 35” pieces through the saw.

– anytime you operate a saw or any power tool please be careful and use it responsibly.

After you run all your pieces through the saw – move your guide over by 1/8” and run them through again. Then move it over and run them through again. Do this until you have cut through a 1/2” of space.

You will have some small pieces of wood that did not get cut out. Simply reach in with your fingers and break them out. You can run them through the saw again if you need too.

After you break all the little extra pieces off you will have nice dados.

Step Three:
Use a Kreg-Jig and drill two holes on each end of your 35” pieces. Remember to stay 1/2” away from the side with the dado.

Step Four: Use your wood glue and pocket screws and attach your 35” piece to the top of the 48” piece.

Step Five: Measure down 27” from the very top and make a mark. Attach your other 35” piece BELOW the line.

Step Six: Simply Slide all 10 of your 1×4’s into the grooves. These planks are what make your planked farmhouse twin bed.

Your 10th piece should lay flat with your 2×4.

Step Seven: Use your wood glue and pocket screws to attach your other leg and you are done!

You can follow all the steps to make your footboard too. The bottom piece of your footboard attaches 2” from the bottom.

Step Eight: Stain (or paint) your headboard and footboard your desired color. I used Minwax Classic gray. I adore this color!

I cut rails for the bed because I didn’t have any. I listed them at the top if you need too as well. Use the smaller pieces as cross braces so your plywood stays nice and solid.

I also like making my own rails because I can customize them. My oldest boy has space under his bed for storage containers, but my younger boy is closer to the floor – the height is a little different but the beds still match!

Also, assemble the rails and head/footboards in their room – just a tip!

Gray-Stained Farmhouse Nightstand

You guys!! If you follow me on instagram you have already heard the news!! But this past weekend I sold my very first custom bedroom set! The cute lady who wanted the set, wanted a nightstand so I had the opportunity to build this darling gray-stained farmhouse nightstand!

I found the plans on Ana White and switched them up a little bit. I love how it turned out and am thinking I may need to build a couple for my bedroom! The drawer is nice and big and slides out pretty easily and I love the bottom shelf too – some cute baskets would go great there!

If you are thinking about building this dresser, let me give you a few tips – because the cut list on Ana’s site is wrong – and I wanted to pull my hair out on such a simple project – because it took sooo much longer and I had to recut and cut new pieces. Here is a correct cut list!

2 – 1×12 @ 8 3/4″ (Sides)
4 – 1×2 @ 11 1/4″ (Side Trim – needs to be width of your 1x12s)
4 – 2×2 @ 26 1/4″ (Legs)
2 – 2×2 @ 11 1/4″ (Side Stretchers, same width as your 1x12s)
4 – 2×2 @ 23″ (Front/Back Trim)
1 – 1/4″ Plywood or paneling or other sheet goods @ 26″ x 8 1/2″ (back, optional)
3 – 1×2 @ 11 1/4″ (Top Supports)
3 – 1×6 @ 28″ (Top)
2 – 1×6 @ 22 3/4″ (Front and Back of Drawer)
2 – 1×6 @ 11 1/4″ (Width of 1×12 – Sides of Drawers)
1 – 1×12 @ 21 1/4″ (Bottom of drawer)
1 – 1×12 @ 26″ (Bottom Shelf)
2 – 1×2 @ 23″ (Bottom Shelf Trim

You can find all the info to build it here!

Also – add a couple screws to the back to act as a drawer stop.

Don’t you think a lamp would look awesome on this table? Me too!!

Tips for Installing Drawer Hardware

Hello Friends! I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July holiday! Spencer finally had some days off work so we were finally able to do some really fun things together as a family! We hit up the waterpark, went out for dinner, stopped by the snow cone shack, bought and lit off some amazing fireworks, made smore’s in our firepit and camped in the backyard. Yesterday we escaped the heat a little bit and headed up to the mountains for a tin foil dinner picnic! It is always nice to take a little vacation from the mundane every day things – like cleaning!

Today I wanted to share with you some quick tips for installing drawer hardware. If you are just learning to build – this can be a little tricky – making sure everything is straight and flat and looks good.

To make things easier for us and because Spencer used to install cabinets for a living – he created this awesome little hardware template. The template has a few of the common drawer hardware sizes and then gives you the holes for certain measurements. You simply line it up with the center of your drawer front, decide where you want the hardware to go and using an ale, press in the holes.

Tips for Installing Drawer Pulls (7) copy

Here you can see that I have marked my hardware with an ale and made the holes for where my pull will go.

Tips for Installing Drawer Pulls (1) copy

Using a 3/16 drill bit, drill out the holes where your marks are. Make sure you drill straight up and down.

Tips for Installing Drawer Pulls (2) copy

When your holes are drilled, flip your board over and using a 3/8 speedbor – notch out the back of your hole. You only need to give your drill one good squeeze because you only want the hole as deep as the screw head. Here are some great tips for using a speedbor.

Attach your hardware. Here you can see that the screws lie flat and don’t poke out at all. Now when you attach your drawer fronts to your drawers, they will sit flat and you won’t have a gap between your drawer and your front from the screws.

Use the same measurement for each drawer and repeat all the steps and your furniture piece will be awesome!
